A startup has now implemented linking location to account transactions (using Yodlee):

US-only for now, but they have a UK office so I imagine they plan to expand to Europe following the usual path of countries (UK, DE, FR etc).

Now that it's very easy for a card issuer to make a smartphone app, it would be great for them to enable a reliable location-finder to be used in risk rules.

A user should be able to choose that a physical card transaction can only happen in the same country where their phone is to be found. As long as there's reasonably strong authentication on the phone app, this would be another tool to both prevent fraudulent physical card use and reduce false positive when a cardholder is travelling and doesn't want to notify their bank every time.

If Google doesn't build this sort of service with Latitude, then issuers should build it - or even better, the card schemes could build one per scheme and provide the information to all their affiliated issuers.

Hi, Scott Hintz from TripIt here... interesting post! I wanted to make sure you knew that TripIt has an API that we released a few weeks ago. It would be relatively easy today for your credit card issuer to use our API for the purpose you mention. You'd have to grant your credit card company access to your TripIt account, but once you do that, you'd be in business.
